The Black Tide Baetis is a pattern based on a fly originally tied by Zach Vandehey. I tweaked it to my liking, and after a few refinements and hundreds of drifts now has a mainstay in my box. This bug has just the right amount of flash without overwhelming the pattern and the micro tinsel also creates a nice ribbing effect. The inverted pink bead makes the fly ride hook point up keeping it from hanging up on the bottom and adds a subtle trigger point. The inverted bead also keeps the hook point more exposed than traditional beads for better hook engagement. Last but not least is the cdc hackle collar that adds a bunch of movement to this fly fish can’t resist. When some baetis nymphs are ready to emerge their wing pads darken to a black color. I believe this pattern represents this very well and is something fish seem to key in on from time to time. Fishes great both dead drifted and swung as an emerger.
How the fly got its name:
Black tide is an oil spill that is pretty substantial in the water. When wet, the shine and darkness of the pattern mimics that of an oil spill.
